Since I haven't blogged in so long, rather than do some catching up, I thought I'd share a SO! moment today and as a result, the lesson I learned in humility tomorrow.
SO! Here goes.
It is 9:30 in the evening in Smalltown USA (pop. 1200).
We are heading over to the convenience store to get our drinking water.
Sunny fails to turn on his signal to warn the car(s) NOT behind, before or beside us that he is going to turn right. The officer who, donned in his night vision goggles, is finishing up writing a citation for the other poor soul who unfortunately spit his gum out the window at the wrong time is about a half block away with lights still on. And man is he good! No blinker! Another threat to the city of Smalltown USA! Two tickets in one night! DadadaDAH!
We are pulled over, cited with 'failure to use proper signal' and fined $75.00 with a $3.00 surcharge (what the heck the surcharge is for I've no clue). I ask, "Couldn't you let him off with a warning since this is the first time?" He replies a tad sarcastically, "How do I know it's his first time?" Now THAT cocky attitude just chapped my hide.
Now I know $75. (with a $3. surcharge) isn't a lot compared to what might be charged in a big city. But when you are on a budget and Christmas is in 19 days, well...
Sunny has an excellent driving record and, yes, he does use his turn signals, so we really felt this was just not right. Sunny got out and went over to talk to the officer again. He told him he's lived here nearly all of his life and seen officers come and go. If he was going to get along in this town, with all due respect, he might reconsider his approach...Sir.
Amazingly, about an hour later the officer knocks on our door. After thinking about what Sunny had told him, he realized he probably was a little too harsh for the offense. Although he couldn't revoke the citation, he suggested that we go down to the PD next day and ask Jan, our friend and local beautician, if she could extend the deadline until Feb. Oh, and Ma asked me to ask you if you'd please not do her perm too tight when she comes in tomorrow. Now where else but in a podunk little town like ours would that happen?
I am happy to say that although we do still have to pay the fine, we did get it extended until Feb. and I will accept donations! (KIDDING!)
Stay tuned tomorrow for my post on the lesson I learned in humility through this experience.
It's All BLINKIN' Good!
