No Longer Naked!

The First Sacrifice:

Genesis 3:9,10
And the LORD God called unto Adam and said unto him, "Where art thou?" And he said, "I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked and hid myself.

Adam was aware of his nakedness. He was exposed. He suddenly had feelings that he had never experienced before. Feelings of exposure, humiliation, being destitute and defenseless. He was afraid and hid. The first time the word 'hid' is mentioned in the Bible is in this verse. The first response to the sinful nature was to hide.

Genesis 3:21
Unto Adam also and unto his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Did Adam and Eve leave the Garden sporting a fashionable leopard or zebra print? No, they left wearing the skins of the very first sacrifice the LORD God had to make. I would imagine the skins would still be carrying the odor of the warm, bloody wetness of a fresh kill. (I'm thinking the LORD God didn't take the time to tan the hides of the animals--though he probably wanted to tan Adam's hide!) I'm sure the remembrance of the odor-turned-stench of sacrificial, dried blood would never, ever leave them for as long as they lived.

Fast forward to the Second Sacrifice:

John 19:23
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments...and also his coat...

Jesus was absolutely naked--bare, stripped, destitute, defenseless, unprotected, exposed, humilated. He was naked, and yet He was clothed with the garment of our sin. The garment of being beaten beyond recognition, the garment of blood streaming down his face from the thorns thrust upon and into his head, the garment of water and blood pouring down from his pierced side. The garment of pure love for us.

The garment of the Second Sacrifice!

Isaiah 61:10 (actually, the whole chapter is awesome!)
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness...

{Thank you, Father, that because of Your love for me You gave your Son (through the Person of Jesus Christ) as the ultimate sacrifice. I have asked for and freely received forgiveness, and I no longer have to bear the humiliation of my nakedness (sin), but instead I am clothed in your salvation and wrapped in the warm--just come out of the dryer, smelling like Downey--blanket of Your righteousness!}

It's All No Longer Naked Good!

  3. Good insight! Love to read how people see things I miss and bring it to light. Someone this week mentioned "I am Brabbas" never thought about what he must have been thinking - one minute facing death, the next, free to go! so many layers there.

  4. I've thought at time about what the NT says we're to be clothed with -- the verse you mentioed plus what Colossians says we're to put off and put on -- but I never put it together with Adam's nakedness nor Christ's. Wonderful thoughts!

  7. What a wonderful exchange that took place at Calvary. He wore our sin so that we might wear His righteousness. Only God could think of such a wonderful salvation!
