Hodgepodge Vol 61

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English in 2012-

amazing, baby bump, shared sacrifice, occupy, blowback, man cave, the new normal, pet parent, win the future, trickeration, ginormous, and thank you in advance.

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Go here to read more about how the words are chosen.

The new normal – coming from one who values Christ-likeness (which to many is not normal), the ‘new normal’ to me is an excuse to change what is into something that fits the majority, whether for bad or good, and then brush it off as “Oh well, it’s just the new normal”.  Sometimes it’s not a big deal, for instance—thongs.  I wore thongs as a child.  They are called flip flops now because the word thong has been changed to mean something entirely different.  Do I insist on still calling them thongs?  No, I’ve succumbed to calling them flip-flops.  No big deal.  Now changing what God says in His Word to fit one’s belief system, lifestyle or what have you—that is where I draw the line.  My favorite all-time quote says “Right is right even if no one is doing it, and wrong is wrong even if everyone’s doing it.”

2. Are you easily embarrassed?

Not as much as I used to be.  I guess the older I get the more I realize it’s not all about me.  With this revelation it’s easier to laugh embarrassing moments off.  Plus it gives me good blog fodder!

3. What is your go-to snack?

I enjoy a good homemade cookie with milk.  But I’m careful to not have them around much!  About a tablespoon of Hershey’s dark chocolate chips seems to curb my sweet tooth.

4. Have you ever been to Washington D.C.? If not do you have any desire to go? What site/attraction would you most want to see in that city? If you have been, what's your favorite site/attraction?

I’ve never been further east than Texas!  We have talked about someday wanting to take a trip to DC and visit all the historical sites.

5. sit ups-planks-lunges-squats...which do you hate the least?

I’m not sure what planks are, but since it apparently involves exercise I’m sure I don’t like it!  I’d have to say sit-ups.

6. What's a small act of kindness you were shown that you've never forgotten?

This may or may not be a small act of kindness, but it’s the first thing that has come to me.  About 8 years ago we were going through a severe financial crisis while my husband was trying to get his real estate business off the ground.  Every month for about a year someone gave us $100.  Whoever it was remained anonymous, and the money stopped when we didn’t need it anymore.  I will be forever grateful!

7. Have you ever been a blood donor?

Me and the sight of blood ‘to go’ don’t mix, along with having a huge aversion to needles.  However, my husband is a faithful donor and “the two shall be as one” right?!!!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Rather than ‘occupy’ ourselves by staying and cleaning the ‘man cave’, my daughter and I got out today and took a 2.25 mile walk/bike ride.  It was a ‘ginormously’ ‘amazing’ day.  Since we’re not ‘pet parents’ we didn’t have to worry about carrying a pooper scooper.  Tomorrow the snow is supposed to ‘blowback’ in, which is a mean ‘trickeration’ in my book.  ‘Thank you (all) in advance’ for the ‘shared sacrifice’ of  humoring me and, together, let us ‘win the future’!

It’s All I’m A Dork Good!

  1. =D Love your last paragraph! Very creative and humorous! There are a couple words there that I use all the time so would not want them to leave the dictionary. Ginormous and amazing are two of my favorite words. I remember the first time I heard my sister say ginormous - I was about 4 and she was 14. I thought it was a very cool word and still do. lol

Glad you got to see the best part of the Bronco's game - the win!

    Blessings - Julie

  4. So many bloggers haven't seen Washington DC. I am lucky enough to live a mere 4 hours away, so I have been there quiet a few times. The architecture is beautiful. It really is a sight to see!
Oh! Your last paragraph had me laughing out loud!

  6. That story of the anonymous money is fabulous! I love that the person has remained anonymous and I'm sure they were blessed in the giving.

    Loved your summary!

  7. I agree that "the new normal" shouldn't affect our basic beliefs system, but I've used the term for recovering from a life-changing illness or the loss of a loved one or a major life change, like a move, in that things will never go back to being just like they were, but we can, with God's grace, get used to a "new normal."

  9. Enjoyed your answers, and you are right our #1 was the same. I love your random, very clever! You need to get to DC, granted I felt like a fish in a fishbowl, but there is so much history there. I would love to go again especially since I have a better camera now. Thanks for stopping by my corner and have a great week.
    until next time... nel

  12. Your random thought was perfect! Thanks for the laugh. The "new normal" to mean is what the doctor told me when we talked about my pain and he told me it was time to get use to the new normal. I found a new doctor!

I have always used "a new normal" like Barbara H. above, adjusting to a big life change.
