Friday’s Fave Five

I’m linking up with Susanne at Living To Tell the Story.

1.  Rain for our drought-stricken area of Colorado that so desperately needs moisture.  It drizzled all day yesterday and turned to snow overnight…well, just a light covering…but we will take anything that comes our way.  I have plans for my garden, and as of now our town is on a very strict watering schedule—4 hours a week is all we’re allowed.

2.  And speaking of drought:  I’m sure most of you have heard of gray water.  The kind our ancestors used to water their gardens.  Good ol’ bath water, water from the washer--water that was suitable to be thrown out in the garden rather than let go down the drain.  My husband, being a plumber, has rigged up an inexpensive system that will pump our laundry and bathing water into a holding tank that we will be able to use in the yard.  It’s still in the experimental stage, but in just one large load of laundry and one bath he was able to pump 55 gallons on water!  I couldn’t believe it.  Yay!  I think my garden will be saved.

3.  Monk.  We recently started watching the Monk TV series on Hulu.  I know, you’re probably thinking ‘where have you been’?  Apparently not watching TV!  Anyhow, we discovered the series and are enjoying it immensely.

4.  Having the natural ingredients on hand while fighting a cold rather than reaching for the OTC, chemically-laden stuff.  Such as herbal teas with honey and cinnamon, Kyolic garlic which builds the immune system, of course Vitamin C, good ol’ homemade chicken soup, and water…yep, refreshing water and plenty of it!

5.  Having a fun ‘date’ with my daughter on Valentine’s Day where we toured the Rosemount Museum, had fun ratting around in extremely high winds (see previous post), and ate at a Chinese restaurant that had bad food but great company!

It’s All Smells Like Spring Good!

  1. We LOVED the snow! We have 7-8 inches. So glad our area finally got some moisture.

Monk is a favorite of ours too! We watched the seires on Netflix and enjoyed each one!

Love the water/garden saving idea! Tell Sunny I want him to come build us one too! Or tell Steve how to do it!

    Have a great weekend!

  2. I think we are using more and more the same tricks my grandma used ! (She was born in 1896) The time of wasting is over ! We have a reservoir to collect rain and can water with that. Only we never need it, it rains so much in Belgium ! I too like to watch Monk and I too discovered it quiet late, because here all English spoken movies have first to be translated into French ! Monk speaks perfectly French here, lol !

  3. I've never seen Monk. I may have to look for it on Netflix.
My hubby did a collection tank for water run off from the roof to use for watering. Good for Sonny for his idea!

  5. Good use of the water instead of down the drain. Nothing wrong for it to water the garden. We are in a drought too and got about an inch of snow this week. They said we need about ten feet of snow to catch up on our drought. I don't know if we've had that much if you added up all the years I've lived here.

  6. I enjoy Monk too. Have you ever tried Foyle's War? Not quite as humorous but a very interesting series.

Very smart to utilize your water that way - glad you got some rain. we have lots of snow we could send you :)

Glad you had a wonderful Valentine's Day with your daughter!

    Happy weekend!

  8. So glad to hear you got some moisture where you are. How resourceful your husband is to gather water and save your garden. Thumbs up:)

Most of the shows we enjoy are re-runs. We're always behind!

I just checked out the website for the Rosemount Museum. I love old houses and hope I get to see it sometime, it looks beautiful.

    Have a great weekend, Brenda.

  9. Monk is our favorite, too. I am actually not sure how we missed it, but never heard of it when it was on TV (back in the day when we still had cable). We checked it out on Netflix last year and it quickly became a favorite. We were sad to see it end!

I'm glad that you were able to rig something up for your gardens. I'm excited for our gardens, too, but we have a lot more snow to get rid of first. I'm looking to plant by mid June!

    Have a lovely weekend.

  10. The system for reclaiming gray water sounds terrific. I agree that it will probably save your garden.

A Valentine's "date" with your daughter sounds like fun, even though the food wasn't good. Sometimes those experiences make the best memories. :)

  11. We have had so much rain lately it's crazy! We usually don't get it until April. Glad y'all got some!

The water system sounds neat! I hope it works out for you.

I like herbal meds too. I use them as much as I can for our family. They are much better.

Sounds like a fun date with your daughter!

  12. So glad you've gotten some rain. Wish I could send you some of ours. :-)

That's neat about "recycling" the used water. I take it detergents and such aren't a problem?

I haven't watched much of Monk, but I enjoyed the few episodes I've seen.

  13. I like the concept of gray water. I have never watched Monk (I have no clue what it's about). I usually fight off my cold with natural ingredients, too.

  14. I love a good pot of chicken soup when colds try to come knocking. There really is something about that and hot tea with lots of honey and lemon.

Your hubby sounds like a really resourceful kind of guy. You should patent the idea!

  15. Oh Monk! I loved that show. We didn't know about it until a couple of years ago and then we watched every episode on netflick. It was the last series we watched before we dropped netflick. I love the San Francisco setting because I recognized the landmarks.
I love your recycling of gray water. If I ever have a place to put a tank, I will certainly be doing that. Lucky you to have a plumber husband.

  16. I didn't know Colorado was in such a state with the drought situation. Here in So Cal, we're thankful for whatever rain we get, too :-)

Glad you've found some helpful natural remedies and enjoying a new-to-you series!
