Famous Cantaloupes and Roasted Chilies

I love this time of year when all the fresh-picked produce starts filling up the farmer's market stands. This one is at Rocky Ford, about 20 miles from our house. The Arkansas valley is famous for its Rocky Ford Cantaloupe. I'm not personally a cantaloupe person, but my husband loves it. To each its own I suppose.

Here's the truck fresh off the fields. I had to wait to take this pic until the gentleman pulled his shirt down. Didn't want any cracks showing!

I thought this was a neat pic of the boy watching his daddy. Wonder if he's thinking, "When I grow up I want to be just like you"?

We had them roast a bushel of Anaheim chilies so we could take another little piece of Colorado to my brother. I went back today for my bushel. Now I have a year's worth up in the freezer. Green chili, chili rellanos, chilies for nachos and enchiladas. Yummy comfort food!

What is your area known for?

It's All Good!

  2. Chiles! Never thought about them being seasonal. Here in PA I don't see them very often at any time of year. During Fall, our farmer's markets are well-stocked on pumpkins, gourds, pumpkins, corn stalks, apples, candy apples, pumpkins, caramel apples, and apple dumplings. Oh and did I mention pumpkins? LOL! Sooooo yummy!

    1. Haha! Yes, you did mention pumpkins! One of our favorite cookie recipes is pumpkin with browned butter frosting. I try to only make them in the fall and winter, but my daughter begs me to make them year round!

  3. I'm not a fan of cantaloupe either. Chilies are good though!
The city I grew up in is known as the Salad Bowl city. Celery, carrots, onions, lettuce... It's grown in quantity there!
